Week #5 | Jarrett carries St. Teresa past Clinton | HR Preps | Sep. 27, 2014
Jarrett carries St. Teresa past Clinton : Clinton High School
CLINTON -- St. Teresa sophomore
running back Zach Jarrett rushed for 293 yards and three touchdowns on
26 carries to break open a close game early in a 54-18 Bulldogs win on
Friday.
St. Teresa was ahead 7-0 after a quarter and Clinton got within a point, 7-6, after a Tyler Vidmar 38-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.
But a 62-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Althoff to Brannan Taylor put the Bulldogs ahead, then a 15-yard touchdown run by Jarrett gave the Bulldogs (4-1, 3-0 Central Illinois Conference) a 20-6 lead at half. A 60-yard Jarrett touchdown run and 20-yard TD run by Fyke made it 34-6 after three quarters.
Also for the Bulldogs, Chris Hein rushed for 142 yards and two touchdowns on just seven carries.
Clinton (2-3, 1-2) was led by Vidmar with 111 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
"Defensively we played very well, especially with our first group," Clinton coach John Hayden said. "Offensively we hung around most of the game, but we played too sloppy to be competitive as a whole, so we have to get better in that."

Week #5 | St. Teresa's Safety Net | HR Preps Article | Sep. 26, 2014
St. Teresa safety Patrick Althoff has intercepted four passes in four weeks and has scored six TDs in four different ways -- passing, catching, fumble and interception returns. |
DECATUR -- Patrick Althoff swore off playing football again.
The St. Teresa senior, who transferred in from Bloomington Central Catholic last year, was more of a basketball player anyway. After partially tearing his ACL in a preseason football scrimmage his sophomore year, Althoff decided to focus on basketball.
But coming in this year and having family history on the football field, Althoff decided to give it another chance.
"My dad went here and played football. I kind of wanted to live up to what he did," Althoff said.
The Bulldogs are glad he changed his mind. Starting at free safety, the senior has solidified a secondary that has been impressive so far. He's intercepted four passes through the first four weeks while being a part of a defense that's allowed a 50 percent completion rate and just 221 passing yards.
On a team that has seen plenty of new faces play integral roles, the oldest one may have provided the biggest spark.
"I would say the only reason he's not a captain is because he's only been here a year," St. Teresa coach Tim Brilley said. "We have five senior captains, and he fits right in there. We needed someone to fill the void with Christian Williams being gone, and defensively, he's helped us there."
Part of the reason St. T's had success on defense is that Althoff has given the coaching staff peace of mind while sending more pressure at the line of scrimmage.
"I would say the biggest thing is that he allows us to be aggressive with our corners and the guys in front of us," Brilley said. "We like to put a lot of pressure and take away a lot of routes before they can even run them by being aggressive with our cornerbacks and our outside backers."
St. T plays a 4-3 and often moves the other safety up to basically create a 4-4. That leaves Althoff alone in the secondary to decide where to cover. It's a natural transition from basketball, where he plays the point.
"We already have one safety up in the box, so we're trying to keep him back and be that smart player," Brilley said. "You always have to have that last line of defense you can trust, just in case.
"The (cornerbacks) know they have to worry about the deep ball, but at the same time they know they're going to have help if the ball's actually thrown their way."
It's a bit ironic that Althoff is St. Teresa's safety net when he's had terrible luck with injuries himself.
After tearing his ACL his sophomore year, he missed most of his junior year of basketball because he tore his patellar tendon the second day of P.E. Even though consecutive years were marred by injuries and neither were in an actual game, Althoff said he had little hesitation in getting back to playing sports.
"I still feel pain every once in a while," he said. "I probably can't jump the same that I could before, but the biggest part was getting it out of my head -- that I'm OK, I'll be alright.
"I still have moments in games where I'm like, 'I don't want to get hurt. I'm a bit nervous.' But playing basketball last year and coming back was fun."
Althoff said there wasn't too much of a learning curve even though he hadn't played football for nearly two years. The bigger hurdle was getting a feel of how his teammates in front of him reacted.
"I guess you could say I was a little nervous, because it was my first varsity game ever starting," Althoff said of Week 1. "It was a little intimidating, but then just getting in the groove of everything, it was just like football again."
That was easily apparent in Week 2. Coming off a tough loss against Tolono Unity, St. Teresa shocked Maroa-Forsyth 39-36 and Althoff was a huge reason why. He intercepted three passes, caught a 42-yard touchdown pass and then to top it all off threw two touchdowns on trick plays that helped the Bulldogs retake the lead twice.
Brilley said he knew early on Althoff was his guy if they needed to dive deep into the playbook.
"We practice a few trick plays every week, and he just has that 'it' factor," Brilley said. "He's just an athlete and he just gets it."
Althoff's been more than a one-game wonder. He returned a fumble for a touchdown in Week 3, had a pick-six in Week 4 and is the third-leading tackler for the team. And yes, he's actively looking for those turnovers.
"I love watching the Bears and seeing them get turnovers," Althoff said. "That's what I want to be like.
"Charles Tillman's great. I love when he punches the ball out. That's just awesome. I try to do that, but can't say I'm nearly that good."
Now comes the challenge of continuing that success as pass-happy offenses Sullivan-Okaw Valley,
Tuscola and Shelbyville loom on the schedule in weeks 6 through 8.
"It's been enjoyable so far, but it's because we've been winning," he said. "Got to keep winning."

St. Teresa blows out A&M behind Jarrett : St. Teresa High School
Sep. 13, 2014
By H&R staff report
MOWEAQUA -- Sophomore running back Zach Jarrett kickstarted St. Teresa's offense in its win against Maroa-Forsyth last week, then did the same Friday in the Bulldogs' 47-12 win against Central A&M.
Jarrett started St. Teresa's 33-point first quarter with a 65-yard touchdown run, then finished the
starters' night with a 76-yard TD run as part of a 13-carry, 206-yard night.
"He had a great game and the offensive line played extremely well," St. Teresa coach Tim Brilley said.
Central A&M had touchdown runs from Ethan Woodard and Keaton Garner in the second quarter to pull the Raiders (0-3, 0-1 Central Illinois Conference) within three touchdowns at half, but the St. Teresa defense shut the door from there.
"They controlled the clock in the second and third quarters," Brilley said. "The defense had to adjust a bit, but we kept them off the scoreboard for the most part."
Also for the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0), C.J. Stuart had 72 yards rushing and a touchdown, Patrick Althoff caught a 34-yard TD pass from Ryan Fyke and Jake Handley had a 21-yard touchdown run.

St. Teresa's Revival Full of Big Moments
Sep. 09, 2014 3:00am
By Aren Dow H&R Staff Writer
It's hard to have imagined St. Teresa's turnaround a week ago.
Coming off a disappointing loss to Tolono Unity in which the Bulldogs managed two scores in the second half, St. Teresa lit up the scoreboard and in impressive fashion.
Three of the Bulldogs' touchdowns covered three-fourths of the field, including Zach Jarrett's 76 yard opening-drive score and two touchdown passes that were 78 and 81 yards.
Compare that to their longest play against Unity, a 23-yard run by Ryan Fyke in the first quarter.
Defensively, they gave up about the same amount of yards, but siphoned off the bleeding with interceptions and two recovered fumbles, a drastic improvement from the lone interception in Week 1.
Even in a loss, it would have been a confidence boost to St. Teresa to see plays executed how they are in practice. But to see it in a win, and against Maroa-Forsyth, which had a regular season winning streak of 17 games, that provided Tim Brilley with perhaps his biggest win with the Bulldogs.
CIC Weekend
While St. Teresa made the biggest splash of the weekend with its win, the rest of the CIC made enough noise of their own.
Warrensburg-Latham and Sullivan-Okaw Valley had huge shutout wins, Meridian and Clinton both prevented late two-point conversions that would have tied or won the game for their opponent and Tuscola and Shelbyville looked as strong as ever.
Out of all the teams, Tuscola's game impressed the most considering the strength of the opponent. Georgetown Ridge-Farm had won 35-6 against Warrensburg the week before, but the Warriors and Nick Bates were in control the entire way.
On the eve of CIC play, the rest of the conference should take notice of the accurate passing attacks from Tuscola and Shelbyville. Bates has completed 18 of 28 passes so far, and Shelbyville's Lucas Duckett has connected on 26 of 41.
Aerial Assault
It's too early to predict how Mount Zion's Payton Grinestaff will finish the season in the record books.
But there's no denying he's off to an incredible start.
After tossing 387 yards in Week 1, Grinestaff topped himself with a 399 yard performance against Jerseyville. And he found new favorite targets each week, which could further help keep opponents off balance.
After Mason Bruce and Brandon Price were the beneficiaries Week 1, it was Austin Thacker (261 yards) and Max Gensler (89) who were the top receivers against Jerseyville.
But here's something to chew on. Tuscola's Dusty Burk threw for a H&R-area record of 4,052 yards in 1997. On Grinestaff's current pace, he'll hit 3,930 in 10 games.
Almost There
Sullivan-Okaw Valley has roared out to 127 points in two games this year. They scored 132 last year.

Week #2 | St. Teresa Shocks Trojans | HR Preps | Sep. 7, 2014
St. Teresa shocks Trojans : Maroa-Forsyth High School
Sep. 07, 2014 4:00 am
In a game few gave St. Teresa a chance in, the Bulldogs jumped out to a lead, then recovered from a Maroa comeback to take another lead on their way to a 39-36 win.
Class 2A No. 3 Maroa had defeated St. Teresa 43-14 last year, then the teams began this year heading in opposite directions -- Maroa beat Meridian 56-6 last week while St. Teresa lost to Tolono Unity 50-13.
But St. Teresa (1-1) made an immediate statement on offense, scoring on a 76-yard run by Zach Jarrett less than a minute into the game.
"We had a lot of guys really step up and make a lot of big plays for us," St. Teresa coach Tim Brilley said. "We grew up from a tough loss last week and had a good day."
Maroa (1-1), though, didn't make it easy. After falling behind 19-8 to start the game, the Trojans scored on two long Jack Hockaday runs to take a 22-19 lead. Hockaday finished with 283 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.
"Hockaday's a good player -- we knew it would be a four-quarter battle," Brilley said.
But as good as Hockaday was on the ground, he struggled passing the ball. He was 6-of-13 for 20 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. One of Hockaday's interceptions was returned for a touchdown by JD Mattingly.
"They out-coached us in every phase of the game," Maroa coach Josh Jostes said. "They dominated us in turnovers and penalties, and those are two of the most important things in the game. You can't beat anyone when you have 140 yards in penalties."
St. Teresa's other three interceptions were from Patrick Althoff, who also threw two touchdown passes on trick plays. He was 2-of-2 passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Bulldogs starting quarterback Ryan Fike also threw for two TDs.
The loss broke a 17-game regular-season winning streakfor Maroa, and the 39 points were the most Maroa has given up in a game since its 2010 state title loss to Sterling Newman. It was the most points Maroa had allowed in a regular-season game since Central A&M scored 47 against the Trojans in Week 7 of the 2003 season.
