White, who plays quarterback and safety, broke an 85-yard touchdown run, when the game's result was already well in hand, to give the Rockets a 36-point lead.
The highlight was a nice finale before he left the field for good and Unity went to its second unit and coasted to a 50-13 win against St. Teresa on Friday.
“We've been trying to stay in shape and prepare for that stuff,” White said. “We had a lot of guys subbing in today, so everybody was fresh on the field.”
He accounted for 174 of 341 total rushing yards, the majority of which was split between he and his backfield mate Colton Reed.
But Reed stole the show early. His 96-yard touchdown run gave the Rockets a 12-0 advantage in the first quarter. Unity never looked back.
The senior running back added a 19-yard touchdown run late in the first half to give the Rockets a 21-0 lead, which quickly turned to 28-0 after a turnover and a White touchdown pass.
All night long, the Rockets' offensive line dominated in the trenches. White and Reed benefited from five fresh blockers up front, who didn't have to play defense.
“We're fortunate enough that we can play about five guys on the offensive line and have about five or six that can play on the defensive line and none go both ways,” Unity head coach Scott Hamilton said.
The Rockets ran the ball all over St. Teresa's field and rarely needed to pass, but Hamilton called a throw here and there just to keep the playbook balanced.
White completed 9 of 15 passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bulldogs' offense couldn't catch up as fast as it fell behind. The backfield of quarterback Ryan Fyke and runners Zach Jarrett and Jake Handley didn't have any luck breaking off plays as big as the ones White and Reed made.
“We have to grow up right now, there's no doubt about it,” St. Teresa head coach Tim Brilley said. “They wanted it more than we did tonight. They came out, we made some mistakes and dropped our heads.”
After an early 23-yard scramble showed his potential to move around and attack defenses, Fyke struggled against a tough Unity defense.
There may not be a better tape to replay and learn from than the sequence at the end of the first half.
A fumbled snap, recovered by Unity, led to a quick touchdown for the Rockets and Fyke followed it up by throwing an interception the next time he touched the ball.
Unity's Tyler Clark intercepted the under thrown ball and returned it 40 yards into the endzone, though the play was called back on a block in the back. If not for the penalty and ensuing interception thrown by Unity's Taylor White, St. Teresa may have trailed 35-0 at half.
Instead, it was a more manageable 28-0.
He was a mere 7-of-21 for 46 yards, fumbling a few snaps, under-throwing receivers and taking some big hits.
Brilley rightfully gave his quarterback the benefit of the doubt. "You hate to throw him into a fire, but we don't expect to be in a fire like this," Brilley said. "He could've hung his head and he didn't."
White threw fade passes to his big target a handful of times in scoring territory, though the only success came on a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Even so, Freeman is a huge safety blanket for White. If he's targeted throughout the season as much as he was Friday night, he's bound to have a big year.

DECATUR — Tolono Unity's roster is big enough that it doesn't need as many two-way players as opponents use, but Taylor White does it and he looked fresh late in the game.
White, who plays quarterback and safety, broke an 85-yard touchdown run, when the game's result was already well in hand, to give the Rockets a 36-point lead.

Alex's take
Learning curve
Sophomore Ryan Fyke will be counted on to replace former quarterback Christian Williams, who transferred to Springfield Lanphier this summer.

A redzone target
Unity's Huey Freeman is 6-foot-4, 215 pounds. It's not wonder White pays so much attention to him in the redzone.White threw fade passes to his big target a handful of times in scoring territory, though the only success came on a 15-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Even so, Freeman is a huge safety blanket for White. If he's targeted throughout the season as much as he was Friday night, he's bound to have a big year.

2014 Area Football Predictions | HR Preps | Aug. 29, 2014
This is the third straight season in which I'll try to predict the records of all 34 area teams, but I'm not going to brag about how well I did like I did last year.

St. Teresa (6-4) – If the Bulldogs can win seven and get a home game, they're good enough to win a playoff game. But it's going to be tough not starting 0-2.

Week # 1 | Key Matchups | HR Preps | Aug. 28, 2014
The HR Preps team picks the six biggest high school football games for Week #1 of the season.
HR PREPS: Week 1 key matchups : Preps
Aug. 28, 2014 8:24 pm
Tolono Unity at St. Teresa
LAST YEAR: Tolono Unity was 8-3; St. Teresa was 6-4.
LAST MEETING: Unity won 27-13 last season.
KEY PLAYERS:
For Unity, Colton Reed, Sr., LB/TB; Taylor White, QB; Austin Bonnell, OL
For St. Teresa, Jake Handley, Sr., FB/LB; JD Mattingly, Sr., TE/LB; C.J. Stuart, Sr., RB/LB; Sam House, Sr., OL/DL
KEYS TO THE GAME: The Rockets are missing 14 starters from a year ago but coach Scott Hamilton's program always has something in reserve. Even with the influx of powerful teams, Unity is expected to make a 21st consecutive appearance in the playoffs. That's where St. Teresa last saw
the Rockets. After beating Unity in the regular season, the Rockets came back to win a playoff game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. But now, even with the loss of quarterback Christian Williams, it may be time for St. Teresa to get a taste of revenge. A strong front line should create some room for running backs Jake Handley and C.J. Stuart.

St. Teresa #8
Yes, they lost 80 percent of their rushing offense and anyone who attempted a pass last year, but don't sleep on the Bulldogs.
St. Teresa's offensive and defensive lines look formidable with several big bodies in Sam House, Noah Bowers and Brady Moore up front. If they open up holes for C.J. Stuart like they did for Chris Isom last year, the running game should be in great shape.
As long as linebacker Jake Handley -- who's in the running for the conference's defensive player of
the year -- stays healthy, the Bulldogs are looking at another trip to the playoffs.

COACH: Tim Brilley (4th year, 15-14 career record)
LAST YEAR'S RECORD: 6-4, 4-1 Okaw Black
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Jake Handley, Sr., FB/LB; JD Mattingly, Sr., TE/LB; C.J. Stuart, Sr., RB/LB; Sam House, Sr., OL/DL
OUR TAKE:
The loss of a player the caliber of Christian Williams hurts, but it's
not the death knell it may appear to be. The Bulldogs have remained a
run-based offense under Brilley, and they have the personnel to put up
some big numbers with a strong trio of backs (Handley, Stuart and
sophomore Zach Jarrett) running behind a line that has enough size to
make up for a lack of experience.

St. Teresa OK Without Williams | HR Preps Blog | Aug. 24, 2014
Aug. 24, 2014
By Justin Conn
Christian Williams is an NCAA Division I recruit in basketball. His transfer hit the St. Teresa basketball team the hardest.
But Williams was also the H&R All-County Second Team quarterback last year, throwing for 949 yards, 11 touchdowns and just three interceptions, while also rushing for 417 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Bulldogs will feel his loss on and off the field. In addition to being a great athlete, Williams was popular at St. Teresa – with students, teachers and coaches.
“I'm very close to Christian,” coach Tim Brilley said. “I still consider him one of my players. We have a lot of guys who are still very close to him.”
But, Brilley said, he told his team not to mourn the loss.
“What I told them was, 'He's not dead,' ” Brilley said. “He's just at another school now. It's unfortunate for them because their friend is no longer their teammate, but he's still around.”
Bulldogs senior CJ Stuart is close friends with Williams. There was talk before news of the transfer that Williams might not play football this season, and Williams did spend the bulk of his summer playing AAU basketball. But Stuart said Williams had planned to play football for the Bulldogs. Williams isn't on the football team at the school he transferred to, Springfield Lanphier.
“He thought he would be able to come back, but when he couldn't nobody was mad at him,” Stuart said. “We understood he has no control over it. Christian is going to be find and we'll be fine, too.”
Williams put up good numbers last year and threw a good ball, but St. Teresa is built to run. Williams was a good runner, but he wasn't going to carry it 15 to 20 times per game.
The Bulldogs have three capable ball-carriers in Zach Jarrett, Stuart and Jake Handley. And while they only return one starter on the line (senior Sam House), the incoming talent (juniors Zach Fitzgerald and Noah Bowers, and three sophomores that include potential future standout Cade McLeod) is big and capable of putting up numbers similar to last year's team. That team had more than 2,000 yards rushing, with four players rushing for at least 239 yards.
The Bulldogs will start out with sophomore left-hander Ryan Fyke at quarterback. Fyke reportedly played well at Friday's scrimmage. His receivers are untested, but the Bulldogs' players said they like the potential of senior Brannon Taylor and sophomore Mike Davis.
“When I heard the news (about Williams), I was sad,” Handley said. “But I'm not all that concerned with it because I know the kids coming up are going to be good.”
Fyke will get his shot in the first week, but Brilley called it a "week-by-week" thing, with junior Zach Hooker also in the mix.
"We've had a competition all summer," Brilley said. "We had it in the back of our minds that Christian might come back, but we kind of figured we should be prepared. Both Ryan and Zach have come light years since when we started in June.
"I'd be confident with either of them in the game, but right now Ryan is a little ahead of Zach, so that's who we're going to go with."

Young Bulldogs Hungry for Playoff Run | WDZ AM Video | Aug. 18, 2014
By WDZ AM
St. Teresa not only made the playoffs last year, but took the Okaw Valley Black title in the process. Coach Brilley and the Bulldogs enjoyed the season, but are hungry for more this year. After a disappointing loss to Unity in the playoffs last season, this mix of young and old want to not only take the CIC, but make a deeper run in the playoffs.
